Château Gazin, Pomerol, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

We're big fans of Gazin. This elegant chateau situated on the edge of the Pomerol plateau between Petrus and the Lalande de Pomerol border is on a fine run. They seem to produce honest wines with character and charm without any pretention. The 2018 was a little difficult to assess - the sample we tasted with masked in oak. The palate has rather attractive sappy fruit, quite strict and cool, but detailed and focussed with lots of energy and a vibrant mouth-watering finish of sweet damsons and Victoria plum. Perhaps a little rustic, but if it gentrifies in barrel this will be a delicious Pomerol.

93/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

The 2018 Gazin has a deep garnet purple color. It starts off with scents of cedar, tobacco, and pencil lead, leading to baked blackberries and mulberries, with a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, it is soft and understated in the mouth, with an earthy finish.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Gazin (a blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc) leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of warm plums, black raspberries and kirsch, plus suggestions of wild mushrooms, fragrant earth, Sichuan pepper and tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers impressive energy with approachable, rounded tannins and a lively backbone framing the crunchy red and black fruits, finishing long and earthy.

The 2018 Gazin has a lively, generous bouquet of vivacious wild strawberry, boysenberry and hints of tobacco. The aromatics are well delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, offering seductive black fruit mixed with black pepper, truffle and clove. There is so much finesse toward the finish that it is approachable now, yet it certainly has the substance to suggest long-term aging. Not to be underestimated, this is another wonderful Gazin.
