Château Lafleur Gazin, Pomerol, 2020

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

This Jean-Pierre Moueix estate is well situated between Gazin and the original plot of La Fleur Pétrus. The 8.5 hectare vineyard is planted on clay, silt and gravel soils. It used to be a somewhat rustic style; however, Edouard and Christian have made numerous improvements and this has developed into a stylish, good value Pomerol. The vineyard, with its more humid, cooler environment is well suited to dry, warm vintages like 2020. Following on from the wonderful 2019, 2020 is another stellar performance. For the money, we doubt you'll find much better in this luxurious commune. Produced from 100% Merlot (it’s the only grape planted in their vineyards) this offers a glorious bouquet of decadent floral plums and fine minerals. There’s a wonderful silkiness to the fruit: pure, lacey and intense. Although the palate is dense and concentrated, it is fresh, bright and uplifting with ripe, sophisticated tannins.

critic reviews

92/100William Kelley,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2020 Lafleur-Gazin is the first year produced under the ownership of J-P Mouiex, and a stricter selection of parcels was made in this vintage than hitherto. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries and berries mingled with notions of licorice, violets and new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with sweet, powdery tannins that frame its generous core of fruit.

Lafleur-Gazin 2020 is 100% Merlot and has a deep garnet-purple color. It tumbles out with exuberant notes of stewed black and red cherries, forest floor, and spice cake, plus suggestions of dried lavender and clove oil. Full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of ripe, rich black fruits, supported by soft tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.

87/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2020 Lafleur-Gazin has not really ameliorated on the nose with a slightly disjointed aromatic profile, stemmy black fruit, touches of pencil box, fresh but missing some bandwidth. The palate is slightly better with strict, quite rigid tannins, minty, yet doesn't really "kick on" towards its conservative finish.
