Château Les Ormes de Pez, St Estèphe, 2009

justerini & brooks tasting note

The Lynch Bages team have transformed the fortunes of Ormes de Pez. Once a rather lightweight, gentle claret, Ormes de Pez has taken on the persona of its big brother. Very much a mini Lynch, offering inky, complex aromas or liquid minerals, crushed rocks, violets, dried flowers and taut black fruits. This is produced in a very modern style, possesses immense power and concentration; a very well endowed, but seamless and beautifully balanced St Estephe. 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Lovely wine at an excellent moment to drink, one of the recommendations of the tasting. Welcoming, easy-going, with waves of blackberry compote, pomegranate, vanilla bean and spiced saffron. Ready to drink and share, this is a charming wine which asks only that you relax and enjoy it.

The 2009 Les Ormes de Pez has a strange nose at first, a little distant and missing the same fruit intensity as its peers. There is a slight dustiness here that translates over the palate. Good fruit concentration and grip, just a touch of greenness around the edges with a welcome dash of spice towards the finish. Thoroughly enjoyable if just missing some finesse. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.
