Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux, 2010

justerini & brooks tasting note

The big news from Chateau Margaux this year is the emergence of a third (red) wine. This means a greater selection for Pavillon Rouge. There's no name for the third wine yet, but Carruades de Margaux could be a shamelessly commercial but financially astute choice... 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, Pavillon Rouge will account for 38% of the crop, the same proportion as the grand vin. Paul Pontallier is very happy with the results and believes this to be the greatest Pavillon Rouge they have ever made, and who are we to disagree? A sensual, explosive Pavillon Rouge; the nose is reserved but there are hints of violets, cherry stones and ripe summer berries. The palate is awash with refined crème de cassis fruit and fine minerals. One can't fail to be impressed by the gorgeous, sumptuous, suave fruit, the wonderful polished texture, freshness, elegance and refined tannic structure. Ethereal!

93/100Jane Anson,Inside Bordeaux

Powerful but finessed classic, elegant, with depth and flavour that majors on black fruits and chocolate curls. The tannins here remain a little austere even at 12 years old. First time that the Pavillon Rouge, which made up 38% of the crop, accounted for the same proportion as the 1st wine. Needs time to open, but with a few hours in a carafe it shows its charm.

The 2010 Pavillon Rouge has a delightful, elegant bouquet with wild strawberry, blackberry and cedar aromas, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, veins of blue fruit emerging with time in the glass and with just a touch of salted liquorice towards the finish. This could be à point. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting.
