Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

The Pavillon Rouge 2021 represents 30% of the crop and is crafted from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The pH is the same as 2019 and 2020, although the 2021 appears fresher due to the lower alcohol (13.1%). Berries were harvested with very high IPTs, just below 2011, 2018 and 2020, however, they were big and full of juice, so the Margaux team did a little saignée (bleeding), which reduced yields, but gave more concentration. Plush, but it feels so natural. Opening with a floral bouquet of iris, dark, hedgerow fruit, creme de mûre, this flows effortlessly into a core packed with vivid, gravelly blackcurrant and raspberry – juicy yet crisp with a spine of fine grained, gripping tannins. This is luminous and detailed. A fine Pavillon Rouge.

A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux was bottled in July 2023. It has a deep garnet-purple color and skips out of the glass with eager-to-please notes of black raspberries and fresh blackcurrants, leading to suggestions of rose oil, cardamom, and powdered cinnamon. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegant, with silky tannins and soft-spoken red and black berry layers, finishing with a comforting spiciness.

Beautifully sappy balanced feel, plums, damson, red cherry, sage, gunsmoke, peony, balanced alcohols. This is a 2nd wine with plenty of character, finesse and nuance, stretches out through the palate, a touch more Cabernet Franc this year in the blend, giving a savoury floral uplift. 30% of overall production, 60% new oak. 36hl/h yield, Philippe Bascaules estate director.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge showed well from barrel. Now, in bottle since late June, it has a gorgeous, very pure, almost Burgundy-like bouquet that blossoms in the glass: raspberry, blackberry and crushed violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very succulent tannins, fine acidity, gentle grip and a disarmingly minerally, fresh finish. What a delightful Pavillon.

The 2021 Pavillon Rouge offers up aromas of raspberries, sweet cherries and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively palate that's quite taut and youthfully structured out of the gates, with good depth at the core and powdery tannins. It will reward a bit of bottle age.
