Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru, 2020

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

First impressions reveal a remarkably suave and slick Clos de Vougeot, but it is a lot more complex than it first seems and before too long it shows what a serious and genuine Grand Cru it is. Long, expansive silky dark and blue fruits cover the palate, whilst a red cherry and red berry freshness helps keep up the momentum. Earthier, deeper notes characterise the long finish with notes of earth and spice. Stunning Clos de Vougeot. Méo Camuzet has brilliantly situated vines in Clos de Vougeot, one big parcel is just in front of the Château at the north-west end of the vineyard. A third of the vines were planted in the 1920s, a third 1960s and the rest replanted 20-30 years old. The wine can withstand a large proportion of new oak during its elevage in barriques, which in this case is 85%.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is very promising, unfurling in the glass with aromas of wild berries, cherries, orange rind, potpourri and loamy soil. Full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, it's seamless and complete, with superb depth at the core and a long, resonant finish. It will be fascinating to compare with the 2019 rendition in two decades' time.

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had to shake off a little reduction before revealing its minerally blackberry, raspberry and cassis fruit. Wilted rose petal emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, nicely focused yet surprisingly strict and linear at the moment. This will gain "shoulders" once in bottle.
