Oestricher Doosberg, Alte Reben, Trocken, 2020

justerini & brooks tasting note

As with every other wine region in the world, the term “Alte Reben” or “Old Vines” can be an ambiguous one and open to interpretation. Spreitzer’s Doosberg though is unequivocally “Alte Reben”, being produced from 50 year old vines. The soils are primarily loess-loam and clay with veins of quartz rippling through. Posited at 100m elevation, it is by no means the loftiest site in Germany, however regular cooling breezes from the mountains around Oestrich ensures a beautiful balance between fruit and vibrancy. Picked 8-10th October. Fermented and aged 100% in doppelstuck. Concentrated, crisp grapefruit and pineapple notes with piquant, salty pear and stone fruit accents on the finish. Very long with a mouthwatering, moreish structure and a tight, pithy finish. Superb.
