Barolo, Margheria, 2011

justerini & brooks tasting note

As ever for Serralunga, darker in colour than the Bricco Fiasco. Loaded with sweet dark fruit, fresh bramble, cassis and blueberry with strong liquorice notes , the body is full and the fruit is round. This is dense and mouth filling and although the acid is not high there is a tremendous mineral, chalk quality to this that lends a distinctly fresh, savoury quality that balances out the powerful, ripe fruit. A superb effort. A prime south and south west facing 55 year old plot in the Serralunga d'Alba commune. Aged in the traditional way, for 28 months in large slavonian oak casks - "botti."

The 2011 Barolo Margheria is a dark and powerful wine with toned muscle support and structure that holds it tightly together. Fruit for this wine is sourced from 50-year-old vines planted in the clay and calcareous soils that characterize Serralunga d'Alba. Some 7,600 bottles were produced. The wine opens to dark concentration and bold aromas of blackberry, plum, spice and campfire ash. I would suggest a 10-15 year drinking window for this hot-vintage Nebbiolo.

Iron, smoke, spices, rose petal, lavender and mint meld into a core of dark red fruit in the 2011 Barolo Margheria. Here, too, the style is all about finesse, nuance and complexity. Firm tannins convey an overall impression of classicism. The Margheria is the most classic of the wines in the Scavino range. Three years in cask, with natural malos the spring after the harvest are among the choices that give the Margheria its unique personality. This is a terrific showing from the Margheria, a wine that has blossomed considerably since I last tasted it.
