Barolo, Margheria, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

A completely different beast to the Bricco Fiasco, darker and moresavoury. Compact fresh dark berry fruits packed with salt and mineralcharacteristics; sapid and earthy, quite open knit if not as fruity oraromatic as Bricco Fiasco. A mineral Barolo of spine and nerve. From aprime south and southwest facing 55-year-old plot in the Serralunga d'Alba commune planted on white clay and limestone soils. Azelia’s vines sit alongside those used for Gaja’s Sperss. Aged in the traditional way, for 28 months in large Slavonian oak botti.

critic reviews

94/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2018 Barolo Margheria opens to a wide range of savory aromas with dark fruit, pressed rose, crushed stone and rusty nail. Those rusty or ferrous notes are typical of Nebbiolo wines from Serralunga d'Alba. The wine is tight and firm in texture with a polished and very linear style.

94/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2018 Azelia Barolo Margheria has aromas of gentle warmed strawberry and orange zest with orange peel notes that come and go. On the palate there are lots of very fine, silty-textured tannins which are nicely integrated into the body of the wine. Margheria is in Serralunga, famous for its dense tannins and 'sappidita' or savory, saltiness as the Italians would say. True to type, this Barolo finishes with a flourish of juicy acidity and lingering, savory tannins with mineral notes of flint, chalk, and smoke. It's impressive but needs a little time to come around.

89/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2018 Barolo Margheria has just enough energy and nuance to be mildly interesting. Crushed rocks, mint, white pepper, sage and bright red-toned fruit all grace this translucent, nuanced Barolo. Vibrant saline notes ring out on the finish. The Margheria is promising, for the year.
