Barolo, Vigna Rionda
Luigi Oddero

Barolo, Vigna Rionda, 2015

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Full-bodied dark broad fruit that glossily covers a solid structural foundation. A distinct chalky mineral note adds a surprising freshness to the full hedgerow berry and cherry fruit. Velvety but deep, serious and highly complex, with wave after wave of bramble, tayberry, morello cherry and earthier undergrowth, rock and mineral notes rolling across the palate. The most accomplished and multi-layered Vigna Rionda we have yet to taste from Luigi Oddero. From a prime south-facing parcel at the top of the hill where the soils are very sandy and chalky, planted at 300-340 metres above sea level just above Giovanni Rosso’s plot. A stunning, prime parcel within one of the great historic Crus of Barolo. Aged for 36 months in a large used oak cask (just one 25hl cask was produced) followed by two years in bottle before release.

critic reviews

95+/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Figli Luigi Oddero 2015 Barolo Vignarionda is saturated and rich, showing dark fruit, black cherry, plum, campfire ash, iron and rusty nail. Vignarionda awards flavors and tastes with a strong sense of place, and territory-driven characteristics are especially evident in this vintage. To the palate, the wine is smooth and rich with integrated tannins. Production is only 3,800 bottles (to be releases in October 2021).

The 2015 Barolo Vigna Rionda is soft, fruity and accessible. While certainly a pleasing wine, the Vigna Rionda is not especially complex nor pedigreed, especially within the context of what should be possible at Rionda, one of the greatest vineyard sites in all of Piedmont.
