Barolo, Monvigliero, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Light and fresh with beautifull scented fruit, soft edges, but firm in the middle with a great transparency. A medium bodied nicely aromatic Barolo showcasing juicy strawberry, cherry pith and softly pressed raspberry character. From a fine limestone, marl and chalk-influenced vineyard at 310 metres altitude in the Verduno commune with a south / south east exposure with a special micro climate close to the river where there are big day /night temperature differences. This yields a wine that is equally floral, mineral, smooth and powerful. Aged for one year in large oak ‘botti’ and one year in barriques with a maximum of 10 percent new wood.

The Paolo Scavino 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is a soft and graceful wine that shows blue flower, dried lavender and rosemary essence. Those Mediterranean aromas give this wine an especially distinctive personality, and you might also sense some white pepper and dried licorice root. This wine is soft and nicely flesh out with shored-up acidity and tannins.

The 2017 Barolo Monvigliero is classy and polished right out of the gate. Sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are some of the nuances that open in the glass. Even with all of its immediacy, the 2017 has plenty of tannin. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years. The 2017 is undoubtedly an attractive wine, but its best days lie ahead.
