Barolo, Monvigliero

Barolo, Monvigliero, 2018

justerini & brooks tasting note

Dense dark, spicy fruit cloaked in smooth velvety tannins. Aromatic notes of blueberry, black cherry and pepper. The voluptuous, round texture is offset by a cleansing, vibrant minerality that lifts the finish. From a fine limestone, marl and chalk-influenced vineyard at 310 metres altitude in the Verduno commune with a south / southeast exposure with a special microclimate close to the river where there are big day /night temperature differences. This yields a wine that is equally floral, mineral, smooth and powerful. Aged for one year in large oak ‘botti’ and one year in barriques with a maximum of 10 percent new wood.

critic reviews

94/100Susan Hulme,The Wine Independent

The 2018 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero has a very appealing, perfumed nose with fragrant, floral notes focusing on blue flowers with notes of violet, iris and spice. There is a very crushed velvet, silky texture on the palate with some sweet cherry fruit and lots of fine, savory tannins. Very beautiful. Drink now to 20 years

94/100Monica Larner,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Monvigliero offers dried rose and smoky notes with crushed stone and peppery spice. This is a steady and careful production of 4,800 bottles, and the wine has a lean or compact mouthfeel and a special personality with rigid pinpoint aromas that rise tall from the glass.

The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is such a classy wine. Bright floral and spice notes lead into a core of sweet red cherry fruit in a nervy, beautifully focused Barolo that delivers the goods. All the elements are so well balanced. There is a touch of classical austerity, and yet the Monvigliero has just enough mid-palate pliancy and sweetness to pull it off.
