Pinotage, Swartland, 2023
A Pinotage unlike all others, the 2023 shows a bright engaging personality built around perfume and gentle tannins. 85% of the blend now comes from a cool, windy old 1973 planted vineyard on 100% decomposed granite soils picked over four tranches to ensure freshness. remaining 15% comes from a younger rockier for structure. Jolandie employs a three-day cold soak to extract the sweetest fruit. Fermentation is spontaneous with one punch down a day by traditional, gentle foot stomping. 15% whole cluster and 85% whole berries, bottled after 8 months in used oak and 2 months in concrete.
critic reviews
The 2023 Pinotage comes mainly from a single vineyard planted in 1973, plus 15% from younger vines. It spent 12 days on the skins and 15% whole cluster, less than previous vintages. It then matured for eight months in used 500-liter barrels and two months in concrete. This has a wonderful bouquet with real transparency: red cherries, bergamot and light rose petals scents. It comes across more Grenache than Pinotage. Very balanced and harmonious, the palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and an elegant, understated finish. This is very approachable and utterly delicious.
