2021 is the third vintage of Ultreia La Vitoriana, one of the most distinctive vineyards in Valtuille. A steep half-pipe shaped vineyard, the Ultreia bottling comes from the estate owned parcel (as opposed to the combination of leased and owned blocks which go in to the Vizcaina bottling), equating to 0.3HA facing north on very stony, poor soils. 120+ year old vines on Pie Franco rootstocks. There is always a higher acidity impression here allied to a crescendo like wave of red and black fruits which produces a feeling of immense precision and focus. Long, concentrated and impressive, Ultreia La Vitoriana is a true vin de garde. A magical wine, one of the very best in the whole DO.

The 2021 Ultreia La Vitoriana shows some unusual toasty notes, hints of raw meat and lots of tannins, and this is the more tannic of the Ultreia range even if they lower the intensity here. The wine is a bit wild, 90% from clay and 10% sand (while La Vizcaina is mostly sand). It fermented with 100% full clusters in a chestnut vat with indigenous yeasts. This north part of the vineyard produced only two barrels, and the barrels were well-seasoned to avoid oak in the wine. This is a powerful wine that is going to need time. It opens up nicely with time in the glass.
