Syrah, Hills Range, 2020
A stylish, purple-inky floral and peppery Syrah with notes of dark cherry, blueberry and nutmeg. Medium bodied with a silky fine structure, it was spontaneously fermented and aged in 500L French oak puncheons for 16 months, 33% new oak. From a single north facing 420m vineyard on well-drained clay with shale fragments overlying a schist rock bed.

Fermented with 25% whole yet crushed bunches, the 2020 Syrah opens with a deep, intense and spicy bouquet of dark berries and cherries. On the palate this is a full-bodied, refined, fresh and saline, substantial and persistent Syrah with ripe fruit, round tannins and a long, finely juicy finish. It is stimulatingly saline. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2024.
The 2020 Syrah was grown on the dolomitic limestone of the Spitzerberg. White pepper broods against back fruit. The palate tells us much about the Spitzerberg because the tannins are ripe, fine and crunchy. The fruit is intense. Syrah’s reductive edge shines through, yet there is ample freshness and such juicy flow, concentration and boldness. (Bone-dry)
