Château Calon Ségur, 3ème Cru Classé, St Estèphe, 2010
86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Sadly the hailstorm in early May has accounted for about 50% of the crop, what remains is undoubtedly a sensationally, stylish Calon, packed with dark cherries, slatey minerality, super cool cassis, high toned berries and flecks of chocolate. This offers superb precision and purity and retains great freshness. The tannins are sumptuous and the finish is an engaging melting pot of crème de cassis, dark chocolate and earth notes.

The Denise Gasqueton years, and this is very much old school and very much delicious. Bursting with black chocolate, charcoal, crayon, campfire, cassis, bilberries, rose buds, bay leaf. This is pure Calon and you just want to pour yourself inside it. 100% new oak.
The 2010 Calon-Ségur has a slightly gamey bouquet, vibrant and energetic with plenty of red and black fruit. This appears to gain complexity with aeration, revealing hidden facets with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and a really gorgeous, surprisingly fleshy but focused finish that exudes style and class. What a lovely wine. You could almost broach this now although I prefer to leave this a few more years. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal.
