Château Léoville Las Cases, 2ème Cru Classé, St Julien, 2016
Produced from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc from the grand Clos, this is a handsome, but firm, serious Las Cases. One of the more poetic members of the team described this as an immaculately turned out officer, with coiffured moustache and firmly starched collars. That's a first on one of our tasting notes... but it does paint a rather apt picture. Notes of tobacco, sandalwood, boysenberry, lilac and gravelly back fruit. There is superb, refined, serious fruit on the mid palate. This is concentrated, long and very handsome with aristocratic tannins woven seamlessly through the dark core of fruit. A textbook, infallible Las Cases with no excess and a huge life ahead.

The 2016 Léoville Las Cases is another Saint-Julien with a seriously impressive nose: blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar and light brown leaf scents. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine tannins, really refined, with a silky texture and a peacock’s tail on the finish. Awesome. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.
