Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, Margaux, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

We were saddened to hear of the death of Paul Pontallier just before the primeur tastings. He worked tirelessly for over thirty years for Chateau Margaux, to promote and improve the wines. Although his death was untimely, 2015 will be remembered fondly by those who knew him as his last vintage. It is a vintage that is befitting of the great man, a vintage of depth, classicism, class and refinement. A draconian selection resulted in a Pavillon Rouge that accounts for only 23% of the production. Fashioned from 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, there is such a floral beauty to the bouquet: lilacs, glorious sweet plum and cherry fruit. There is phenomenal texture and poise, quite brilliant. This is such an exquisitely constructed, seamless, bright and stylish Pavillon Rouge, where the fresh aromatic fruit harmoniously flows over the palate from beginning to its very fine and long end. One doesn't feel the hand of the winemaker at all. Totally beautiful!

90/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2015 Pavillon Rouge has a slightly gamey bouquet, though there is fine delineation and the oak is well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated fleshy tannins but it has structure, grip and a sense of composure on the sapid finish. This is a well-crafted Margaux. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners.

Revved up and ready to go, tender melted tannins at the 10 year point, and yet full of life, expertly managed in its delivery of juice and spice, brambled autumnal fruits, really one to look out for. The frame is still fully in place - elegant chalk, crushed rocks, woodsmoke and roses, so delicious. A buy. Paul Pontallier's final vintage as technical director.

A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4 % Petit Verdot, and 1 % Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Pavillon Rouge from Château Margaux has a medium to deep garnet color. It skips out of the glass with vibrant notes of warm black cherries, redcurrant jelly, and boysenberry preserves, plus hints of Chinese five spices, potpourri, and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity with seductively opulent black and red fruit layers and a plush texture, finishing long and fragrant.
