    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Unlike anything else from Bordeaux, Francois Mitjavile’s 2021 Tertre Roteboeuf is a gourmand treat for the senses. This is classic Tertre Rotebouef with its wild array of hedgerow and liqueur fruits, damsons and spices. Floral notes mix with decadent black cherry, Kirsch then incense, liquorice, wildflowers and nori. Expressive and long with loads of sweet toasty fruit, this stains the palate with crème de mûre and graphite. Supple and layered, vibrant and alive, this is an exuberant and seductive Tertre Roteboueuf, which will not disappoint devotees of Monsieur Mitjavile.

One of my best scoring wines En Primeur, and absolutely delivering now in bottle. Juicy damson and cassis fruits, drawn out tannins that are fine but with grip, orange peel, blueberry, cassis, smoked earth, cloves and liqourice bud. Grilled cedar swirls through the palate, adding sweetness but well matched by the fruit, and this has layers of flavour, with the acidity of the vintage turned into sappy lift. Grapes destemmed but not crushed, 16% press wine, 100% new oak and 100% 1st wine, as ever.

The 2021 Tertre-Rôteboeuf has gained some intensity since tasting it from barrel. Well-defined black cherries, iodine, violet and light graphite notes emanate from the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is medium-bodied with a svelte opening, very harmonious with fine depth. Again, as I wrote out of barrel, it is a “gourmand” Saint-Émilion with a nicely structured, slightly savory finish. Excellent.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2021 Tertre Roteboeuf is a little reduced to begin, soon giving way to black fruit notes of fresh blackberries, black cherries, and mulberries, followed by suggestions of tar, violets, licorice, and cracked black pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate is firm and grainy with many finely-packed layers of black fruits and earthy notions, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing on a lingering black truffle note.
