Petrus, Pomerol, 2015

justerini & brooks tasting note

Simply put, Petrus 2015 is a cut above the rest. It is such an understated, aristocratic wine; it doesn't need to boast with concentration or alcohol, it gently caresses and charms with glorious nuanced fruit, superb balance and the most wonderful lift. In fact, Christophe explained that extractions were quite complicated this year. The Petrus team always goes for a soft maceration to understand what they are working with and to be careful not to extract any unwanted flavours. The first 19 days of maceration didn't yield much aroma, so they continued for a further 5 days. They would rather miss something than push too hard and end up with unwelcome flavours. We can confirm that there is absolutely nothing out of place in this regal wine. The bouquet is wonderfully precise and detailed with aromas of pure loganberry, lilac, damson and sloe. There are layers and layers of gently nuanced fruit, minerals and a hint of salinity. It appears almost weightless such is the balance and harmony of fruit, tannin and acidity. A profound and yet understated wine - pure class!

The 2015 Petrus is elegant, pure and almost Burgundian on the nose. This has plush, superbly delineated red fruit aromas mixed with blood orange and wilted rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture that caresses the mouth. There's a little more extraction perhaps. It's more modern in style but this pulls it off. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting.

This is an exceptional Petrus vintage, the architecture remains relatively tight, slate and pumice stone scrape, stunning layers of raspberry, grilled black cherries, leather and fennel. Savoury yet fully ripe, a beautiful sense of contrast, and just beginning to open up and show its potential. The bottle tasted in London was perhaps a little under par, holding things back, but I have a tasting from one month ago where it was showing exceptionally well.

Petrus 2015 has a deep garnet color, with a hint of purple. Upon opening (the bottle was opened in front of me) the nose explodes with an atomic mushroom cloud of molten licorice, black cherry preserves, ripe juicy black plums, and candied violets, followed by hints of Sichuan pepper, Indian spices, crushed rocks, and iron ore. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and fantastically opulent, the palate delivers super-ripe, velvety tannins and amazing tension to the multi-layered black fruits and exotic spices, finishing with incredible length. Polished, pristine, curvaceous and hedonic - out of the gate gorgeous, this baby has a good 50-60 years+ further to go.

When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you cant go back. Little steps are best. His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Petrus (bottled in mid-July 2017) opens in its own time to reveal crushed black cherries, warm plums, mulberries and cedar chest suggestions with touches of anise, lavender, beef drippings and wild thyme plus a waft of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous, exuberant, wonderfully layered red, black and perfumed blue fruits contrasted beautifully by very ripe, very fine-grained and very firm tannins plus an ethereal line of seamless acid, finishing long and minerally. Olivier Berrouet and his team have knocked it out of the park in 2015. Look for this Petrus to build and unfold over the next 20 years and confidently cellar this legend for 40+ years.
