Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

Domaine de la Folie, Rully, Rouge, Cuvée Marey, 2022

Darker fruits but not in any way heavy, indeed touches of limestone minerality rise up on the finish. This feels like the most supple and juicy rendition we’ve tasted. There’s definitely more depth than the straight Bellecroix, yet it retains a translucent, lifted feel. An east facing 45-year-old plot within the Clos de la Bellecroix vineyard. The soils are less deep than the regular Bellecroix, forcing the vines to work a little harder, which results in many millerandee berries. Aged in both steel cuve (one third) and barrique (two thirds,) one fifth of which are new.

Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2022 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey comes from the 1.60-hectare vineyard sector with an eastern orientation and undergoes 15 months in barrel with around 25% new oak. The transparent bouquet brings brambly red fruit, crushed rose petals and loamy scents. It needs the remainder of its élevage to cohere fully. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very pure fruit and laden with minerals, with hints of black truffle and a noticeable marine influence towards the sapid finish. It leaves the tongue tingling afterward - an excellent red Rully.

Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie

An exciting Domaine reborn. Clémence and Baptiste Dubrulle took over at the Domaine in 2010, but the estate’s history goes back three hundred years. It was Clémence’s grandfather that really made the reputation of the Domaine as one of the greats in the Côte Chalonnaise in the sixties and seventies. The Domaine fell on hard times and had nearly gone to ruin until Clémence and Baptiste took over and set about restoring it to its former glory. What a turnaround. The Domaine, based in Chagny, stretches over 13 hectares of Rully, two-thirds of which is planted to Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir. Viticulture is sustainable, respecting both tradition and the environment, chemical herbicides are avoided and harvest is manual in small cases. The wines, which are from some of the region’s finest single vineyards, are aged in steel or with oak barrels up to a maximum of five years-old depending on the cuvée. It’s wonderful to see this Domaine fulfilling their potential and showing that of the Rully region for producing, classy, pure wines of huge character.
