Volnay, Taillepieds, 1er Cru, 2019
More on the sapid and savoury side compared to Mitans, a slightly warmer, fuller and spicier profile of wine showing flavours of dark berries, cocoa, crushed stones, salt and a hint of vanilla pod . A little taciturn for now, but deep and built to last. Fermented only with whole bunch, the ageing is with a shade more new oak (approximately 40% ) but this is barely discernible, its just a fundamentally different wine with a strong terroir character. Taillepieds has gravelly top soil over limestone resulting in tight-grained powerful wine. These are the domaine's oldest Volnay vines, 80 years old.
critic reviews
Aromas of peonies, plums, red berries, potpourri, warm spices and orange rind introduce de Montille's 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and supple tannins that assert themselves gently on the finish. As usual, this will require some patience.
The 2019 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru was showing a little more oak on the nose compared to the Champans. The 100% whole cluster lends some black pepper and clove notes to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good density and grip and a bold but balanced, slightly earthy, spicy finish. Good potential but it will need time.
