Bonnes Mares, Grand Cru, 2018
As is so often the case, this is a little reticent at first, almost surly. However, the texture and shape are fine and nicely curved. Initially thick-set with a blast of flavour on the palate - deep, earthy dark berry and sloe flavours and then the wine kicks on and moves up a gear, the back half of the palate revealing more ethereal, elegant and floral fruit which persist and echo on the finish. This may take a little coaxing from the glass, but it is mightily impressive when it opens up. From 1.5ha planted on white soils on the Chambolle side of the appellation. Fermented with 30% percent whole bunches and aged in 80% new oak.
critic reviews
The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 30% whole clusters. It has a perfumed bouquet of blackberry, hints of cassis, crushed violet and touches of potpourri, very well defined and focused and delivering the intensity one expects from this growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and just the right amount of acidity. Wonderful harmony and composure here, gently unfolding toward a satin-textured finish that lingers long in the mouth. Bon vin!
