Gevrey Chambertin, Lavaux St Jacques, 1er Cru, 2019
A nose of sweet fruit infused with a resinous pine and cedar quality that recalls the En Champs. The palate delivers seductive flavours of small berries steeped in liqueur, notes of bramble, griotte and kirsch fruit too. Heady and full of sunshine for sure, but not too decadent either. For there is real class, composure and sensuality here. An excellent 1er Cru, one of the appellation's higher, cooler vineyards next to Clos-St.-Jacques. Fully destemmed and aged in 40% new oak.
critic reviews
The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, one cuvée from Drouhin-Laroze that was 100% destemmed, was showing a bit of reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, the oak more integrated here, and a dash of black pepper toward the finish. Racking will enmesh the new oak further, although this is still just a tad sweet on the finish. Because of that reduction, I decided to retaste this in bottle rather than giving a score now.
