Côte Rôtie, Les Grandes Places, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

As ever more severe and strict than the other wines in its youth but brilliantly defined. Serious and muscled, intense, rocky, earthy flavours but finishing on a lovely ripe griotte, black cherry and violet notes. On the darker side of the spectrum and seriously profound but not without beauty. Grandes Places is a fabulous single vineyard in the Verenay commune planted with 75-year-old ‘Serrine’ vines, which is the traditional Syrah of Ampuis. The wine is aged for 24 months in 30% new oak and is bottled without filtration.

94/100Josh Raynolds,Vinous

Deep, dark violet. Primary dark fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense, candied flowers and exotic spices, along with subtle cracked pepper and cola nuances. Deeply concentrated blueberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors slowly turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Shows outstanding energy and mineral thrust on an extremely long, focused finish that features fine-grained tannins and repeating blue fruit and floral character.
