Côte Rôtie, Les Grandes Places, 2020

justerini & brooks tasting note

Suave, brooding and powerful. Layered and replete with beautiful, dark sun-kissed fruit offset by deep earthy mineral qualities. Suave yet driven, quite open for Grandes Places but not losing its serious side, mystery or composure. Outstanding. Grandes Places is a fabulous single vineyard in the Verenay commune planted with 75-year-old ‘Serrine’ vines, which is the traditional Syrah of Ampuis. The soils here are poor like Viaillère but more crumbly in structure, so the roots can go deep. The resulting wine is very profound and mineral. The wine is aged for 24 months in 30% new oak and is bottled without filtration.

96-98/100Josh Raynolds,Vinous

Dark, bright-hued purple. Heady black and blue fruit, violet, incense and smoky mineral aromas are complemented by hints of licorice and exotic spices. Appealingly sweet and expansive on the palate, offering concentrated but almost shockingly lively black raspberry, blueberry, floral pastille, smoky bacon and fruitcake flavors that show sharp delineation and mineral- and spice-driven lift. Steadily building tannins give shape to the mineral-tinged finish, which emphatically echoes the blue fruit, floral and spice notes.
