Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Riesling, Spätlese, 2016
Again that glorious impression of sunshine, such a defining feature of the wines emanating from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, with an almost perfumed fragrance leading to a palate of sun kissed peaches. So fine, so elegant, this is a Spatlese of the purest silk and probably the most refined Spatlese in Thomas's growing range.
critic reviews
Thomas Haag's second vintage of this iconic grand cru, the 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese, displays a very aromatic stone fruit aroma. On the palate, this is a very delicate, finessed and elegant Spatlese that represents the weathered blue slate soils gorgeously. The finish is crystalline and salty. Tasted March 2018.
Temporarily cheesy, reductive aromatic overtones on the nose thankfully do little to spoil the delight in emerging scents of apple and pink grapefruit wreathed in honeysuckle and heliotrope. Satiny in feel and possessed of generous primary juiciness, this finishes with soothing persistence, its sweetness obvious but supportive and an appropriate undertone of wet stone perceptible even through such rich fruitiness.
