Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Riesling, Spätlese, 2017
A little spontaneous fermentation note soon blows off to reveal a nose of fine yellow fruits in this very pure, succulent and polished Spatlese. Key here is a deep core of slate minerality that drives this seamlessly from start to finish, the fruit fused effortlessly with the slick and complex slate notes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Effortlessly long.
critic reviews
Temporarily cheesy, reductive aromatic overtones on the nose (exhibited at the same stage by the corresponding 2016) slightly detract from scents of fresh apple and honeysuckle. The palate is polished, subtly creamy and buoyant, with appley juiciness and inner-mouth perfume that follow into an unapologetically sweet but still refreshing finish of impressive sheer persistence.
The bright colored 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese is deep, sharp, fresh and precise on the flinty nose that's still a bit reductive. Salty-piquant and crunchy in its slatey character, this is a highly stimulating Spatlese with a long, intense and tensioned finish. A fabulous Spatlese. Tasted in March 2019.
