Halenberg, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2025
The most heavenly, elegant nose and such a contrast to the Frühlingsplätzchen: cool and airy, with mineral notes, lemon, mint and basil. Silkier on the palate than the Frühlingsplätzchen and seemingly more concentrated, with white peach and an intense saltiness running through the wine. There is none of the reduction or edginess that Halenberg can sometimes show in youth; instead, this is already remarkably classy and complex, developing notes of lavender as it opens in the glass. The blue slate and quartzite soils of Halenberg lend the wine its customary mineral structure and seriousness. Incredibly good. 12.5%.

The 2025 Riesling Monzinger Halenberg Grosses Gewächs, from Devonian slate, shines with smoothness. A tender creaminess shimmers on the nose and subsumes lemony brightness, vividly ripe white peach and immense coolness and power. This has such a smooth core that it somehow buffers the stone, with yeast, beautifully measured ripeness and such suppleness. (Bone-dry)
