Im Sonnenschein, Weisserburgunder, Grosses Gewächs, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A blend from the younger vines in the top Im Sonnenshein vineyard, a big step up in complexity, definition and tension. Cool pear, gooseberry and stony salty fruit notes dominate the palate, with freshness but also the calmest delivery of flavours. This is going to be a mighty fine bottle with a few years' bottle age.

The nose fascinatingly suggests oysters and mussels in its mingling of animal, herbal and mineral elements. With that come scents of apple, almond and lime. The full, surprisingly firm palate and lingering finish also happily surprise with their brightness of fruit, but only hint at the animal and mineral savor that the nose had led me to anticipate. Perhaps this just needs a bit more time in bottle.

The higher the wine quality, the less fruit you get if you have a Rebholz in your glass. The 2018 Im Sonnenschein Weisser Burgunder GG mixes ripe, bright fruit aromas with the dust of crushed limestone. This is pure and even piquant, and it won't be easy for all our readers to say clearly that this is not Riesling. There is more limestone here than any variety profile. On the palate, this is a wide, precise, fresh and elegant wine with a silky texture, very fine tannins and ripe acidity that leads the wine to an intense and elegant, lush and stimulating finish with well-hidden power. This is an insane Pinot Blanc, indeed, and it's terribly long and salty. It's highly recommended as one of the world's finest Pinot Blancs. Tasted in January 2020.
