Kirchenstück, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

justerini & brooks tasting note

Pretty, high-toned Riesling aromas with a fine reduction, the Kirchenstück 2023 is a touch lighter and leaner than it usually is with light grip to the finish – centering on lemon, white pepper and spearmint. This bottling represents a meticulous selection of just 2,000 bottles after the hail. Hailing from a plot above the winery in Hohen-Sülzen, Kirchenstück is a relatively flat vineyard with a high proportion of limestone and loess. The Grosse Lage section is only a small portion of the wider site.

The 2023 Hohen-Sulzen Kirchenstuck GG is deep, intense and slightly minty on the still reductive and yeasty but predominantly chalky nose that is less hard than in the Zellertal Riesling due to a layer of loess. Elegant and almost charming on the palate, this is a full-bodied, savory and sustainably saline Riesling with fine tannins and powdery grip on the finish. It might not be as complex or as challenging as the Zellertal, but it's really fine, elegant and still tensioned. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.
