Barolo, Cannubi, 2011

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

As one door opens, another closes. Just as the Altares' share-cropping agreement for Brunate ends, they reach a deal to lease some well placed vines in the original part of Cannubi. This is made in the same way as the Brunate, short fermentation and maceration followed by 24 months in 30% new oak barriques but the wines are poles apart in style. The 2011 Cannubi bursts with open, headily perfumed floral ripe fruit - offering notes such as kirsch and garriguette strawberries. The palate is dominated by silky, sweet, intense red fruit flavours mixed with touches of tea leaf and fresh cut flower. More extroverted, voluptuous and forward than the Brunate, a wine of infinite pleasure. 1500 bottles were made.

critic reviews

96/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

A regal, aristocratic Barolo, Altare's 2011 Cannubi is just as fabulous today as it has been on the previous occasions I have tasted it. Ripe, silky tannins caress the palate as this lifted, precise Barolo shows off its multi-dimensional, exquisitely beautiful personality. Elio Altare won't divulge the exact location of the parcel he is sourcing fruit from. Much like a great spot for white truffles, this dirt clearly produces fruit of the highest level. The 2011 Cannubi is nearly impossible to resist today, but it will be even better once some of the baby fat drops off. This is one of the wines of the vintage.
