Sweet raspberry and strawberry, luscious in its expression but with quite grand scaled tannins, finishing on sophisticated notes of black tea, blossom and citrus. It has a more cushioned oak impression on the palate. 100% Nebbiolo produced from two plots in the Arborina vineyard, one from the 1940s and one from the 1980s, fermented and aged in 100% new oak barrique for 18 months.

The Elio Altare 2022 Langhe Rosso Giarborina is all Nebbiolo from the Arborina vineyard. I get a minty note with sweet oats, apricot and dried orange. The bouquet is a little strange but interesting. The 2022 vintage landed during the drought years and a heat wave, and this wine records a 15% alcohol content. It does have some cooked fruit aromas with grenadine and candied cherry. Production is 1,600 bottles.

The 2022 Langhe Giarborina is fabulous. The Giarborinha, Altare's 100% Nebbiolo bottled with one year in French oak, shows what was possible in this very challenging hot year. Red cherry fruit, kirsch, cinnamon, dried flowers, mint and orange peel soar out of the glass. Readers will find a wine of tremendous stature and presence. Superb.
