Barolo, Rocche Rivera, 2015
Lifted, finely-scented red alpine berry fruit. Incredibly focused and bright. Salty and tangy with a pin point precision and firm, fine-grained tannin. The richness comes in waves after the taut and vital attack. Sweet but jewel-like alpine strawberry and red cherry fruit haunt the exhilarating and expansive finish. Artful, fine-tuned Barolo. Rocche Rivera is the historic name for a fabulous little-known plot within the Scarrone vineyard that is a continuation of the famous Rocche vineyard of Castiglione. Sitting above and to the right of Roagna’s Pira. The poor soils and east facing exposure make for a wine that favours elegance, freshness and minerality over power and body.
critic reviews
The 2015 Barolo Rocche Rivera is a powerful, wild wine. Game, smoke, iron, tobacco and grilled herb notes, along with the wine's rather coarse tannins, all amplify an impression of rusticity that runs through this potent, tannic Barolo. I would give the 2015 at least a few years in bottle to come together, but I imagine it will always be a bit rough around the edges.
