Barolo, Carobric, 2013
Rocche di Castiglione is the dominant part of this blend and it shows with its high-toned fresh red fruit aromatics. Intense, crisp fruit, less oak spice notes than some of the other Scavino wines and more tight-knit red berry fruit. Bright, complex and long flavours. Tense tannic and concentrated but not at all thick or heavy. Brilliant, vivid and pure. A blend of three top Crus, Cannubi, Rocche and Bric del Fiasc, aged the same way as all of the other wines, for a year in barriques and a year in large oak ‘botti’.
critic reviews
The 2013 Barolo Carobric is a wine with a bright future, but is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the tannins are super imposing and yet there is an underlying sweetness to the fruit that is impossible to miss. Readers will have to be patient, but the 2013 Carobric is extremely promising. I especially like the freshness and energy here. Moreover, the Carobric has a track record of developing beautifully in bottle. Put simply, the 2013 is a terrific Carobric in the making. As always, Carobric is a blend of fruit from Cannubi, Rocche (Castiglione Falletto) and Bric del Fiasc. The blend of grapes from various sites contributes to the wine’s super-classic feel, especially in this vintage.
The 2013 Barolo Carobric represents a blend of fruit from three sites: Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc. To my palate, this wine really stood out as different from the other wines in the Scavino portfolio. There is a rougher or greener note here that I did not encounter in the others. The wine shows a youthful and nervous personality overall with dark fruit and grilled rosemary.
