Barolo, Carobric, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Very sadly this is the last vintage of this cuvee, with the Cannubi component disappearing after the expiry of a long lease. What a beautiful bow, boasting crisp, bright, red berry fruits – very Rocche in style. Racy and tense, the ethereal fruits hovering above some solid foundations. Harmonious, gripping and crispy, incredibly fine cut and with the most wonderful perfume that echoes on the long finish. A blend of three top Crus, Cannubi, Rocche and Bric del Fiasc, aged the same way as all of the other wines, for a year in barriques and a year in large oak ‘botti’.

The 2018 Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric is a blend of fruit from three different vineyards, Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric del Fiasc. This 2018 is immediate and open on the nose with a combination of spice, green herbs and flowers. It has a lovely focus and drive on the palate with savory, silty textured tannins giving it an edge. There is an energetic quality to this wine. Wait one to two years and keep for up to 25.

Made with fruit from Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc, the Paolo Scavino 2018 Barolo Carobric needs a few moments to open before the aromas come into full view. Sweet cherry, earth, licorice and rusty nail rise from the top, and on second nose, you might recognize truffle essence as well. I like the vibrant, lifted character of this wine. This is a 5,800-bottle production.

The 2018 Barolo Carobric shows terrific energy and focus, naturally in the smaller-scaled style of the year. There’s terrific precision driving the bright red cherry, spice, mint, pipe tobacco and floral nuances. In 2018, the Carobric is a bit nervy, but the aromatics and balance wrap everything together nicely.
