    Justerini & Brooks Tasting note

A new plot which Lukas has taken over from the Mullineuxs, Lotter is South Africa’s second oldest red vineyard, planted in 1932 in Franschhoek. In fact, it is so low-yielding and late-ripening that it sometimes loses its leaves before they have picked the fruit, and yet, it always seems to come good. 100% destemmed and raised in cement, it is a total departure from the glossier Leeu Passant style, but is totemic of Lukas’ pursuit of freshness and agility in wines at all costs. Fresh raspberry, tea leaves, cranberries and lavender, it is a super-pure refreshing style with all the depth and intensity that old vines bring.

The 2021 Lötter comes from a vineyard in Franschhoek, Cinsault with a few Semillon stowaways. It is 100% de-stemmed and fermented and matured in concrete vats for 10 months. It has a bright, red cherry scented nose; so pure that I just prefer the penetration of the Geronimo. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, beautifully balanced and cohesive, fine depth with a fresh raspberry and cranberry fruit. This is a very fine debut.
