Lotter, Cinsault, 2023
2023 is the third vintage of Lotter, a pure Cinsault from the second oldest red vineyard in South Africa, planted 1932. Lukas it took over from the Mullineuxs in 2021 and admits that the last three vintages have been a financial challenge in this site. Happily, the results suggest that at least the wine itself is worth it! For the 2023 is clearly more concentrated than the Geronimo but with the most alluring flow and beauty. Elegant, with a fine, sweet intermingling of red and dark fruits lifted by 60% whole bunches. Complex and long, this to us feels like the best one yet. Total production sits at just three 500L barrels.
critic reviews
The 2023 Lotter comes from Cinsault vines planted in 1932 that produce naturally low yields. This was 100% destemmed and aged in three 500-liter French barrels. It has a detailed redcurrant and pomegranate nose commingling with wild mint, fennel and a touch of thyme. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, piquant red fruit and a dash of white pepper toward the finish. Linear in style, it has a dry, almost "aloof" finish that keeps you coming back for more. Superb.
