Grenache Blanc, 2018

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

From a single vineyard in the Piekenierskloof averaging 20 years old at 600-650m elevation. Donovan laments that “we don’t have old Grenache Blanc in South Africa. The oldest Grenache Blanc I knew of was 42 years old, but it was pulled out before I could get my hands on it.” Bottled early at the same time as the Cinsault and Cinsault Blanc after around six months. The most saline Grenache Blanc we’ve tasted from Rall, the ’21 offers up crisp apples, lemon and just a touch of jasmine – a really fine-boned style of Grenache Blanc, raised entirely in concrete eggs.

critic reviews

90+/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2018 Grenache Blanc is whole-bunch-pressed and matured in concrete and clay (no oak). It offers generous lemon curd, brioche and orange blossom scents that are well defined. The palate is fresh on the entry, offering orange pith and clementine notes, and quite tight at present. The slightly curt finish suggests it will need a couple of years to really show its mettle in bottle.
