Grenache Blanc, 2021

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

From a single vineyard in the Piekenierskloof averaging 20 years old at 600-650m elevation. Donovan laments that “we don’t have old Grenache Blanc in South Africa. The oldest Grenache Blanc I knew of was 42 years old, but it was pulled out before I could get my hands on it.” Bottled early at the same time as the Cinsault and Cinsault Blanc after around six months. The most saline Grenache Blanc we’ve tasted from Rall, the ’21 offers up crisp apples, lemon and just a touch of jasmine – a really fine-boned style of Grenache Blanc, raised entirely in concrete eggs.

critic reviews

90/100Anthony Mueller,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Fresh, ripe and mineral-driven, the 2021 Grenache Blanc offers a citrus-laden nose with white flowers and delightful hints of petrichor. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright and fresh as it evolves with a food-friendly nature and succulent acidity, which will continue to bring pleasure for years to come. Give it a try.

The 2021 Grenache Blanc comes from Piekenierskloof fruit, now augmented Kloovenberg fruit, the former fermented in concrete eggs. It has a glorious and very pure bouquet with hints of almond, lanolin and white peach. The palate is well balanced and quite closed as Donovan Rall aims to do. This is linear and saline towards the finish. Afford it two to three years in bottle, and you will have a very fine Grenache Blanc, though it doesn't quite have the complexity of Rall's other cuvées.
