Each mixed case includes two bottles of each of the three wines (Montecillo Vineyard, Charlie Smith Vineyard, Caldwell Vineyard); the perfect way to discover the unique and distinctive qualities of the Di Costanzo wines.
Charlie Smith 2022 has an aromatic cherry fruit driven profile and great definition and finesse. Beams of crisp tannins support the fruit and give a linear, lifted overall character. Lovely energy and drive throughout. The dark red and purple volcanic soils found in this vineyard sit at 1700ft on Sonoma’s famed Moon Mountain, which backs onto Napa’s Mt. Veeder. Massimo was fortunate in being one of the first to cherry pick his spot following a change in ownership.
The Caldwell vineyard for a very long time made up half the blend of Randy Dunn’s Napa Cabernet bottling. Planted in 1983, this is by far and away the coolest site in the Di Costanzo portfolio. In 2022, having to wait for full ripeness has resulted in a dark fruited, supple, hedonically textured wine that is open, up front and ultra-engaging. A much more tender offering than is the norm for a Di Costanzo wine, but none the less delicious for it.
One of the great vineyards of Moon Mountain, planted in 1968 and dry farmed and organic for as long as anyone can remember. Sitting at 1800 feet, above the fog line, on volcanic soils, Montecillo basks in the evening sun and is always the first sites to ripen in the portfolio. In 2022 a total of three barrels were made. Picked before the heat spike this offers up rippling dark fruit and dried flower notes in a package that is taut, mineral and brimming with restrained intensity. The tannins are impeccably crafted, and the dark fruit glows persistently on the finish. Superb.
