Château Gloria, St Julien, 2015

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

We were generally very impressed by the balance and harmony of the wines at the St Julien UGC. Few were blockbusters, but they all had ample fruit, a sense of freshness, sympathetic tannins and a sense of cohesion. Henri Martin's wines are always ambitious with lots of extract and colour. Slightly reductive notes on the nose are followed by ample bramble fruit on the palate. It seems a little severe on the basis of this tasting, but there is admirable freshness, energy and good underlying fruit with quite an impressive structure, so this should evolve very nicely. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot and aged in 40% new oak.

This style of vintage really suits Gloria, with its cheerful, exuberant character, silky tannins and clear power. You'll find plenty of precision and bite through the blueberry and cassis fruits, excellent quality, bright, bristling and full of life. The signature of St Julien comes through, and this is softly spoken but with quiet confidence, layering on slate and gunsmoke edges on the finish. 40% new oak, harvest September 21 to October 7. A notable success in the vintage, the 2015 Gloria exhibits aromas of sweet dark berries, cigar wrapper and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate. Impressively concentrated and seamless, it's built around ripe, powdery tannins that are so supple that the wine can already be approached with pleasure.
