Château Talbot, 4ème Cru Classé, St Julien, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

After a string of successful vintages, we were really disappointed by the 2021 sample we tasted. Green bell pepper, notes of pyrazines, it also seems evolved with a hint of rot. The tannins also seem astringent. We will reserve judgement as we only tasted this once at the St Julien UGC, where there were some perplexing wines. 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

critic reviews

87/100Lisa Perrotti-Brown,The Wine Independent

The 2021 Talbot has a deep garnet-purple color. It features notes of fresh redcurrants and blackberries, followed by hints of dried Provence herbs and black pepper. The medium-bodied palate is lively and straightforward, with a light chewiness to the tannins and a savory lift on the finish.

Attractive aromatics, this is a careful, steady hand on the 2021 tiller. Shows fresh acidities that are less resolved than the acidities in 2016 or 2019, but skilful winemaking here, and St Julien can almost get away whith this because there is an expectation of finesse. Fine tannins and blueberry fruits give charm. 60% new oak for ageing, Jean-Michel Laporte director.

The 2021 Talbot, bottled in early May, has an unapologetically classical-styled nose: light black fruit, antique furniture, freshly rolled tobacco with some pencil shavings. It gains a little more fruité with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Nicely balanced, this is underpinned by a keen thread of acidity, a bit austere toward the finish like many in this vintage. I wonder whether it will gain a bit more flesh during bottle aging?

88+/100William Kelley,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2021 Talbot offers up aromas of black fruits, licorice and toasty oak, followed by a medium-bodied palate with a fleshy attack that segues into a concentrated but also somewhat firm, angular palate. It will require a bit of patience.
