Pommard, Clos des Epenots, 1er Cru, 2016

justerini & brooks tasting note

Serious and brooding. Deep, structured but fine-cut. Crunchy, finely chiselled flavours of bramble, raspberry, cherry and herb. Racy and powerful, a gradually expansive wine that gathers momentum the longer it’s open. Multi-layered and imposing. Shows great promise. One of the great Pommard climats producing wines of great finesse and longevity. The vines were planted between 1948 and 1978 and the soils here are well-drained.

The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and blue fruit on the nose, floral with hints of pressed violets and iris, quite pure and demonstrating very well integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent tannin that insistently grippes. Just a slight chewiness towards the finish and yet there is a satisfying degree of elegance and poise throughout this Pommard. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.
