Pommard, Clos des Epenots, 1er Cru, 2021

justerini & brooks tasting note

Fine precision on the nose. More sweetness here, juicy with plenty of blood orange, wild strawberry and plum, sweet tannins, then a touch of orange peel on the finish. This has lovely sense of charm and succulent power. A crackling, layered yet elegant Pommard that highlights the success this appellation has been having in recent years. One of the great Pommard climats producing wines of great finesse and longevity. The vines were planted between 1948 and 1978 and the soils here are well-draining.

The 2021 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru does not quite deliver on the nose and I find more complexity on the Beaune Grèves by direct comparison. The palate is well balanced and has a degree of elegance on the entry. It is quite cohesive and slightly bitter towards the finish with a peppery aftertaste. Not bad, but not long-term.
