Domaine Jean Grivot

Echézeaux, Grand Cru, 2019

justerini & brooks tasting note

Broad-shouldered, enveloping and persistent, the Echezeaux is buttressed by oodles of purple fruit and plenty of structure. Of all the wines, this feels the most underdeveloped in the line-up. Although tannic and dense at present, there is a huge amount of complexity just below the surface, but it is going to be a while before those nuances reveal themselves. Bramble, black plum and black cherry stones are at present the most discernible fruits from a mass of concentrated, hearty fruit. The mouthfeel is intense and incredibly long, and there is no doubt that this will come good, for all the elements are there, however patience is going to be required. Echezeaux from two prime plots, les Rouges and Cruots.

critic reviews

93-95/100Neal Martin,Vinous

The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru was dense and broody on the nose, a stroppy teenager hiding in his bedroom. It only reluctantly offers blackberry, briar and pressed iris flower aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, one of the most decadent of Grivot’s 2019s in barrel. Touches of dark chocolate and black truffle enhance the persistent finish. Very saline and spicy on the aftertaste. This is a long-term Echézeaux.
