Puligny Montrachet, Champ Canet, 1er Cru
Etienne Sauzet

Puligny Montrachet, Champ Canet, 1er Cru, 2019

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

A dense, concentrated and very compact Puligny that takes a while to get going. Underneath the rich, unctuous texture lies ripe mirabelle, acacia honey and peach fruit with a grounding earthiness. A Puligny with Meursault tendency. A great Puligny vineyard situated mid-slope, above Combettes and next door to Meursault Perrières, planted on a well-balanced mix of clay and limestone soils. The vines average 50 years old.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet was one of the lowest-yielding cuvees chez Sauzet this year, and it's a ripe, powerful wine. Mingling notes of honeycomb, orange oil and pear with hints of fresh bread, white flowers and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and textural, with a deep core of fruit and succulent acids. It will be interesting to revisit it in bottle.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru has a more austere bouquet compared to the La Truffière: granite and flint notes, a touch fumé in style. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, strict and correct, a Puligy with a sapid finish that cries out for fruits de mer! Very fine, though one for the Puligny hardcore.
