justerini & brooks tasting note

The steep slopes of this intensely chalky vineyard come into their own in a growing season like 2014 – a cool, high yielding year. Capturing all the rays the sun had to offer, Clos des Goisses' south facing vines produced grapes of brilliance and ripeness, resulting in a glorious Champagne that offers the site’s natural power tempered by the fresh luminosity and detail of the 2014 vintage. The vintage was the second cool season in a row, though markedly different to the very late 2013. Not only was harvest earlier in 2014, but yields were significantly higher too, so the wine has a more relaxed, delicate, flowing feel than its predecessor. The fruit is absolutely pure, with a clarity of expression that suggests a long window of drinking; a bottle opened now will charm and delight, and we're quite certain this will be a total joy at 10, 20 and 30 years old. Charles Philipponnat's view is that the fruit will remain pure and dominant, with less of a turn to the savoury tones of coffee and cacao than some of the more intense and structured vintages.

The 2014 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is aromatic, soft-spoken and quiet in demeanor. This is an especially floral, delicate Goisses with lovely floral top notes and decidedly mid-weight structure. The 2014 remains noticeably fresh and vibrant, but I just find it a bit light on the mid-palate. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 2023.

The 2014 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses, the latest rendition from this walled vineyard, reveals a fresh, energetic character with aromas of pear, peach, licorice, spices, white fruits, spring flowers and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and chiseled, this is a structured, tension-filled but ethereal Champagne with high acidity, sign of a cool-weather vintage. Although already thoroughly enjoyable, it should age well over the next 10 years. This is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay, disgorged with 4.25 grams per liter dosage.

The Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 14 is a classic, somewhat yesteryear style of Clos des Goisses that is a blend of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay coming from 14 different small parcels each vinified separately with only the best, ripest elements included in the final blend. None of the wines underwent malolactic to retain freshness and it was finished Extra Brut with a 4.5 gram per liter dosage. Ethereal, floral notes of white viburnum waft over layers of ripe red apple, lemon butter biscuits, almond nougat, clover honey and toast then flow into a medium to full-bodied palate infused with a high-gloss, vibrant acidity shining a Klieg light of freshness on pure red berry fruit and citrus intensity. There is an ease of elegance throughout, and incredible length on the creamy finish. 20,000 bottles. Disgorged in March 2023 and finished with a 4.5 grams per liter dosage. 19984 Bottles produced

The kind of dry that in Champagne puts the emphasis on all the right places - salt-scraping, pure citrus, quince, gooseberry and lemon grass, with chalky persistency, relaxing through the mid palate to show brioche, almonds, candied ginger, graphite, concentrated and scintillating, so good. Another cool vintage in Champagne that here puts the emphasis on finesse, but with higher yield than the 2013, all perfectly handled by the legendary 5ha of Clos des Goisses walled vineyard that is located on the slopes of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Thierry Garnier cellar master. 60% aged in Burgundy barrels, 40% in stainless steel tanks, no malo, 4.5g/l dosage.
