Saarburger Rausch, Riesling, Grosses Gewächs, 2023

Available Vintages
justerini & brooks tasting note

Rausch GG shows a mix of ripe appley fruits and a herbal touch on the nose. The palate is nicely animated with a fine acidity peppered with savoury notes of fennel and pink rock salts and a slatey herbal tang to the ripe finish. Fermented and aged in a 10-year-old fuder barrel until April and then moved to a newer neutral barrel for the last three months of ageing. From two plots: a tiny 0.4ha section of the vineyard planted in 1880 that remains, despite some obvious replanting, entirely ungrafted, and a “younger” 50-year-old block.

critic reviews

95/100Anne Krebiehl,Vinous

The 2023 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Grosses Gewächs was picked from the oldest parcel of the Rausch, featuring 140-year-old vines and a parcel of 50-year-old vines. Mango on the nose is framed by passionfruit foliage. The palate offers a streak of lemon on slate rocks, buffered slightly by creaminess, yet remains exquisitely slender and streamlined. Really light but wonderfully zesty at the core.

95+/100Stephan Reinhardt,Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2023 Rausch GG is deep, pure, fresh and mineral on the intense, highly elegant and subtly citric as well as herbal nose. Full-bodied, dense and refined on the palate yet firmly and persistently structured, this is a rich and complex yet always pure, saline and mineral Rausch that bears great complexity and mineral tension yet should be cellared for at least another five years. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.
