Barbaresco, Gallina, 2017

justerini & brooks tasting note

Fresh, herbal and fruity, red berry aromas precede an earthy, structured palate of body and gravitas. Complex undergrowth notes jostle with hedgerow fruit and sweet spice characteristics. Complex and concentrated, built within a sturdy framework. The result of their smallest ever production in this vineyard, just 2200 bottles were made. A clay-dominated, south-west exposed vineyard that faces the river, so it has a very windy microclimate despite it not being particularly high, 240 metres altitude. Ageing is the same as for the other crus, 2 years in Slavonian oak casks, but is kept an extra year in bottle before release.

critic reviews

93/100Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The 2017 Barbaresco Gallina packs a serious punch of acid and tannin, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and orange peel open with some air, and yet the Gallina remains pretty reluctant today. I would give it a year or two in bottle, minimum.
